I've been looking for a network like this!

You see, I too am a web copywriter, one who's been particularly involved in several long-term projects which are considered joint ventures.

Now I'm branching out a bit and seeking some short-term contract work.

Thanks, Steve for occasionally posting some of your fees. One thing I've struggled with is what to charge. I come from the "internet marketing" sector where there is more BS than truth, and by far, the great majority of people who need good copy either don't have the money, or don't understand the value.

At any rate, I'll be devouring all the information I can find. Folks, don't be surprised if I inquire about different nuances of your business experience.

Thanks for having this network,
Shari Thomas

Hi Shari,

I'm just north of you in Seattle and I really appreciated your posting, especially when you wrote, "By far, the great majority of people who need good copy either don't have the money, or don't understand the value."

At recent networking events I heard:

"If you're charging that much you must be targetng millionaires" (when I gave a ballpark number after someone gave me *their* ballpark for a different service)

"Copywriters charge by the hour, don't they?"

"You're going to limit your earnings if you list yourself as a copywriter."

So I'm probably going to give up "live" networking and stay on the web, where I have room to explain that I charge not just for copy, but for strategy and message too. I don't compete with eLance.

I'd love to hear what others think.

Ah, Seattle, my old home town. I don't bother with networking in the real world any longer. It's too hard to find someone in a relatively small circle that values superior writing service and the invaluable experience of what works and what doesn't. So I stay with the Net in networking and it works great. I guess "live" networking is akin to going to a small high school and trying to find the perfect mate. Some can do it, but the pool of possibilities is oh, so small. Better to widen the dating pool, which the Internet does. I now work out of Florida (better weather, no earthquakes) and none of my clients care except those I found through live networking when I was in Seattle.

My two bits.
